Physics professors received UBC faculty research awards

February 14, 2013

Congratulations to PHAS Professor Dr. Gordon Semenoff for receiving the Jacob Biely Research Prize, and Associate Professors Dr. Kirk Madison and Dr. Joerg Rottler for receiving the UBC Killam Faculty Research Fellowships (Junior Category).

Kirk’s areas of research include condensed matter and atomic, molecular and optical physics. He is also a CIFAR scholar in Quantum Materials. Joerg’s areas of research include condensed matter and computational physics. Before joining UBC, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton University. Gordon received the most prestigious research prize the University offers, the Jacob Biely Research Prize.

Gordon has been a professor at UBC since 1990. His research interests have been in superstring theory and duality of string theories with strongly coupled gauge field theories and in quantum gravity. He is noted for his co-invention of the parity anomaly in odd-dimensional gauge field theories and his pioneering work on graphene. He was recently appointed Officer of the Order of Canada in 2012. An award reception for all faculty research award recipients will be held on Monday March 25, 2013 in the Glass Lobby of the Chan Centre.
