Physics for the Community
What to learn about innovative research and the role of physics and astronomy in our world - past, present, and future? Here are a few opportunities to catch a physics and astronomy public lecture presented or hosted by the department.
PITP Public Lecture Series: These PITP public lectures are intended for a broad audience, from inside and outside the university. They provide a forum for outstanding researchers from around the world, as well as from UBC, to discuss the work in physical theories. A veriety of topics (from physics, history, anthropology, to biology and philosophy) and their relevance to physical theories of the early 20th century (relativity and quantim mechanics) are presented in everyday languate accessible to non-specialists, including the general public. While the seminars concentrate on questions associated in some way with quantum phenomena, ideas on various foundational problems in physics and the philosophy of science are also be covered. Informal discussion between the speaker and the audience is encouraged. The seminars will usually take place on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, in the evening.
The Physics & Astronomy Department (PHAS) Events Calendar shows our department colloquium speaker series, and the UBC Connects speaker series and Alumni Events Calendar showcases UBC experts in research areas across Science, and the UBC Experts guide is a searchable site for experts in physics and astronomy.
Triumf Saturday Morning Lecture Series: Presented by Triumf, UBC, and SFU, this year the lecture series focuses on the Frontiers of Modern Physics. The lectures are presented at a level appropriate for high school students and members of the general public. There is no charge for admittance, and students are encouraged to bring friends and interested family members. Teachers and members of the public are also welcome.
Cannot make it to the lectures and want to learn more about physics and astronomy from the comfort of your home? Check out the Physics & Astronomy collection at the UBC cIRcle respoditory cIRcle. UBC cIRcle is an open access digital repository for published and unpublished material created by the UBC community and its partners. You can find digital materials (podcasts, videos, presentations from meetings and conferences) created by PHAS members in this collection. The genreal public can access materials stored in cIRcle free of charge.
