Andrea Damascelli Honoured as 2026 Guggenheim Fellow

We are proud to announce that PHAS researcher Andrea Damascelli has been named a 2026 Guggenheim Fellow, joining the 101st class of distinguished scholars and artists recognized as “among the world’s best thinkers, innovators, and creators in art, science, and scholarship.”

Established in 1925 by the Guggenheim Foundation, this fellowship provides recipients with substantial support to pursue independent research “under the freest possible conditions.” Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $450 million in fellowships.

Andrea’s research explores the low-energy electronic structure of quantum materials with a particular focus on the interplay between spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom in complex systems and one- and two-dimensional nanostructures. Using advanced techniques such as angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), his work probes the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of novel materials, contributing to the development of next-generation quantum technologies.

He is currently a Canada Research Chair in the Department of Physics, Co-Director of the UBC–Max Planck Institute–University of Tokyo Centre for Quantum Materials, and Scientific Director of the UBC Blusson Quantum Matter Institute.

Andrea has has garnered multiple honours including being named a Fellow of the Max Planck Graduate Center for Quantum Materials (2021), a Fellow of the CIFAR Quantum Materials Program (2019), and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division (2018).
