It’s Just a Phase We’re Going Through: An Exploration of Phase-Contrast Imaging in (4D)-STEM
Event Information:
Abstract:The widespread adoption of fast pixelated STEM detectors has driven the rapid development of new methodologies for recovering phase information from electron microscopy data. Recovering phase information offers significant advantages over conventional methods, across a range of challenging applications: (i) imaging light (low atomic number) elements that are often difficult to detect; (ii) low-dose imaging of beam-sensitive materials, including many systems relevant to the net-zero transition; and (iii) mapping long-range electric and magnetic fields, which is essential for understanding and developing complex nanoscale devices.In this presentation, I will survey a range of phase-imaging approaches, spanning conventional TEM, segmented-detector STEM, and full 4D-STEM. By comparing these techniques across a variety of materials systems, I will highlight their underlying principles, practical strengths, and current limitations, providing guidance on where each method is most effective.Bio:
Dr. Laura Clark is a Royal Society University Research Fellow (~Associate Prof) at the University of York, UK. She leads the SySTEMatic research group in systematic method development in electron microscopy. Much of this work is focused on phase-contrast and 4D-STEM imaging tools to enable imaging of the most challenging samples, to remove the high-resolution materials characterisation bottleneck in materials science.
Prior to moving to York, she previously worked in a range of institutions, across Physics, Materials and Engineering, including Antwerp (Belgium), Monash (Australia) and Oxford (UK) and held a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship in Leeds (UK). This multidisciplinary, broad based experience guides the SySTEMatic approach her research group now follow.Full seminar info can be found here.
