Title:

Shedding Light on Neutrinos with Hyper-Kamiokande

Abstract:
Neutrinos are among the most abundant particles in the universe, yet also among the least understood. The discovery that they change flavour as they travel, and therefore have mass, gave us our first glimpse of physics beyond the Standard Model. It also opened a new frontier of questions: Do neutrinos and antineutrinos behave differently? Which neutrino is the lightest? Are there more than three kinds? Answering them demands detectors far larger and more capable than any existed so far.

In this talk, I will present Hyper-Kamiokande, the next-generation neutrino experiment designed to tackle these questions, including its Intermediate Water Cherenkov Detector designed to control key systematic uncertainties before oscillation occurs.

Bio:

Dr. Xiaoyue Li’s research interests focus on understanding the fundamental properties of neutrinos and the nature of dark matter.

Li has worked on the T2K and DUNE experiments, and before joining TRIUMF, worked on a direct detection experiment called MADMAX that aims to search for QCD axions that could make up galactic dark matter.

Li is currently involved in the Super-Kamiokande experiment and the upcoming Hyper-Kamiokande experiment, which is scheduled to begin in 2027.

Li’s work aims to improve the precision of neutrino measurements, especially in understanding how neutrinos and antineutrinos oscillate differently. This includes developing more advanced detector calibration systems and analysis methods, using test beam data to improve our knowledge of neutrino interactions, and applying machine learning to make event reconstruction more accurate and reliable.
