Research Associate position in the UBC Pulsar Group

Applicants are invited for a Research Associate position at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Canada, starting July 15, 2013.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the Pulsar research group in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of British Columbia.  The group is active in pulsar search and timing experiments.  Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Physics or Astronomy and previous postdoctoral experience in 1) high-precision timing of millisecond pulsars, including combining data from multiple telescopes and instruments, careful parameter measurements using Markov-Chain-Monte-Carlo estimation of uncertainties in the tempo and tempo2 software packages, and the use of the timing data for constraints on alternate theories of gravity and other fundamental physics such as limits on the gravitational-wave background and  2) the use of machine-learning algorithms to identify the most pulsar-like signals from the candidates returned by search algorithms.  Excellent programming skills in python as well as at least one compiled language are essential. The successful applicant is expected to take a leading role in the development and publication of these techniques and results.

Salary will be competitive, and dependent upon experience. The appointment should begin on July 15, 2013 and will last until August 31, 2014.
