Research Associate Position in Microfluidics - II

A Research Associate position is available in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at The University of British Columbia. This position is being created to provide high-level laboratory experimentation and group support for a project working on high-throughput analysis of antibody-secreting cells using microfluidic devices. The successful candidate will conduct interdisciplinary research in the areas of microfluidics and immunology. S/he will develop high-throughput assays for proliferation and functional analysis of antibody-secreting cells with potential application in immunotherapy, all within microfluidic devices constructed using multilayer soft lithography techniques. S/he will be expected to conduct all aspects of the research including interpreting all results. A successful candidate would have demonstrable (via publications, preferably) experience with molecular biology and microfluidics.

The successful applicant must have at least 5 years of postdoctoral experience working with microfluidics, a PhD degree in cell biology, immunology, chemistry or molecular biology. Demonstrated expertise in the following are desired: fluorescence microscopy and related image analysis, working in a Class 10000 cleanroom environment, and skills in multilayer soft lithography (design and fabrication); single cell PCR and whole transcriptome amplification are especially relevant, with a particular focus on immune cells (FACS sorting strategies). Experience with high throughput digital PCR analysis is also relevant to this work. Finally, knowledge of polymer surface chemistry and coupling chemistry strategies on various substrates is required to develop and perform custom assays in microfluidic devices. Good oral and written communication skills and the ability to work on a team project are essential.

Applicants should complete the online application form   (please accept the security certificate) making sure to select Research Associate in Microfluidics FAC-2013-06 and have 3 reference letters in support of your application be sent to: jobs(AT)phas.ubc.ca. Please ensure that reference letters quote competition Fac-2013-06  Applicants should also include a 1-page statement of research interests in the area of microfluidics and copies of two representative publications.

Applications will be reviewed starting October 1, 2013. This position will initially be for one year, at a salary range of between $52,000 and $55,000 CDN.
