The Science Behind Project Hail Mary
Event Information:
Abstract:
Project Hail Mary has captivated audiences with its gripping storytelling and surprisingly realistic science. Whether you're planning to show the film in your classroom or simply want to use it as a launching pad for exploring astronomy topics, this webinar is for you!
Join Discover the Universe team member and astrophysicist Alicia Savelli as she unpacks the real science behind the story. From distant suns and exoplanets to the search for alien life and the stunning aurorae (beautifully depicted in the film), Project Hail Mary explores a wide range of fascinating astronomical concepts. We'll have a closer look at what the story gets right and how you can bring these ideas into your classroom.
Registered participants can join the live presentation and will be sent a recording and related resources afterward by email.

Welcome to Space Camp Saturdays!
The Department of Physics & Astronomy has partnered with the H.R.MacMillan Space Centre to bring you some stellar ASTRO family-friendly outreach brought to you from our students, staff and faculty! Come join us!
October theme: Cosmic Lens!
This Saturday, October 24 from 12:30pm to 4pm is all about discovery!
Abstract:
Our featured talk, Searching for Nature's Magnifying Glass to Decode the Dark Universe, will explore the history of gravity and how massive objects can bend and magnify light through gravitational lensing. Learn how this fascinating phenomenon gives scientists a powerful way to study dark matter, one of the universe's greatest mysteries!
Bio:
Hrishabh Srivastava is an upcoming PhD student in Astronomy and a member of the Euclid Strong Lensing Science Working Group. After beginning his academic journey in engineering and data science at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, he transitioned into astrophysics to pursue his long-standing interest in astronomy. His research focuses on identifying strong gravitational lenses in Euclid images to better understand the Universe. Outside of research, he enjoys hiking, reading historical philosophy, and communicating science to wider audiences.
