Phys 100 Introductory Physics Section 102 (Fall, 2007)
Lecture
hours: 1100-1150am, MWF; Location: Hebb Theater
Lecturer: Prof. Fei Zhou, Off: Henn. 345, Email:
feizhou@physics
Research and teaching site: http://www.physics.ubc.ca/~feizhou
I
will hold office hours every Monday 200-300pm in my office Hennings 345.
Important
information:
c) Phys 100
Resource Center (TBA)
e) Phys 100 Course
Outline—Timetable
f) Etext, MP and companion website
for Knight
Important:
1)
Homework assignments will be posted at Mastering
Physics site usually on Mondays and due in about 10 days.
You
need to check your Mastering Physics account every week to see new assignments
and details of deadlines etc.
2)
Lab manuals are available for downloading at the course lab site Phys
100 Labs: Experiments. Usually there are prelab
exercises
you can do at home before coming to labs. They are available a few days before
your labs. Please read lab manuals before labs.
3) At
WebCT, you can find pre-course test and survey and post-course ones.
Pre-reading
Week
II (Sept 10 –
I
am going to discuss energy and conservation. Mainly focus on kinetic, potential
energies, basic energy models and introduction to thermal energy. Materials you
can pre-read are Chapter 10 and 11 of Knight, Vol. 1. See also Physics 100
Timetable for more information.
Week
III (Sept 17 –
In
this week, we start discussions on heat transport. We will focus on heat
conduction, convection and spend some time understanding
house
heating (see drafts of lecture notes posted before actual lecture hours). The
other kind of heat transfer is radiation; this will be discussed in week
IV. See also Physics 100
Timetable for more information.
IMPORTANT:
Midterm
is scheduled to take place on Friday, Oct 12, 2007.
Week
IV (Sept 24 –
In
this week, we will finish our discussions on heat conduction and house heating
(see drafts of lecture notes posted before actual lecture hours).
The
other topic that we will focus on is radiation, and radiation spectrum. See also Physics 100
Timetable for more information (etext is needed
this
and next weeks).
Week
V (Oct 1 –
In
this week, we continue our discussions on radiation spectrum and start
discussions on solar radiation, earth energy balance, and a
simple
climate change model. See also Physics 100
Timetable for more information.
Week
VII (Oct 15 –
In
this week, we will finish our discussions on an improved climate model and
further discuss the impact of Green house gases on
Climate
change. See also Physics 100
Timetable for more information.
Week
VII (Oct 22 –
In
this week, we will finish our discussions on kinematics and give an
introduction to force and motion. See also Physics 100
Timetable for more information.
Week
VII (Nov 5 –
In
this week, we discuss apparent weight, work-energy relations, and most
importantly applications to transportation. See also Physics 100
Timetable for more information.
Important:
You need to submit files of presentation to your section TAs by Monday, Nov
19.
A sample of final project available here.
Lecture
notes are available in both ppt and pdf format.
