Physics 200: Relativity and Quanta
Fall 2015
Welcome to Physics 200!
The first lecture will be on Wednesday, September 9th at 9am in Hennings 200. There will be a tutorial
every Thursday, including the
first week of classes (on Thursday, September 10th).
For current students: Once the semester starts, I recommend you use
Connect instead of this webpage
to get access to your grades, the discussion boards and reminders.
The webpage you are currently viewing can be used during Connect outages and
if you are having trouble downloading files. It contains basically all the relevant information and is kept
up-to-date. However, you might miss some course announcements if you don't log into
Connect regularly. If you are not logged into Connect,
you will need to provide your CWL login information to download files
(problem sets, tutorials, pencasts, etc...) from this website.
For visitors: Many links to content on this page are available only to current students
and require log-in.
Here is some preliminary information for Physics 200, Fall 2015:
Lectures: Monday, Wedneday, Friday: 9am-10am in Hennings 200.
Mandatory Tutorial: Thursday 11am-12:30pm in Hennings 200.
Textbook: For the first half of the course, we will use
'Special Relativity' by T.M. Helliwell, a paperback that retails for about $60.
For the second half of the course, there will be a course pack available
from the bookstore. The course pack is the first 4 chapters of
'Quantum Physics' by John S. Townsend. If you are planning on
taking more quantum mechanics courses, you might find it useful to
own the entire book instead of buying the course pack from the bookstore.
This is the same book and course pack that was used in 2013 and 2014.
Clickers:
you will need an i>clicker for the lectures.
i>clicker is a response system that will allow you to respond to questions
I will ask during class. You will be graded on your in-class participation.
If you don't already have a clicker, you can buy one at the UBC Bookstore.
You will also need to register it: there is a tool on
Connect for you to do so.
You need to register your clicker by Friday, September 11th. Info on registering clickers
can be found
here.
