Teaching from Home

Teaching from home can be a challenging undertaking. A few resources shared by other UBC units might be useful to help support this.

UBC’s Learning Technology Hub (https://lthub.ubc.ca/)

A central resource where faculty and staff can explore the learning technology tools available to them at UBC—for use in traditional classrooms, blended courses, and fully online learning. This site recommends effective tools for different learning technology uses (http://lthub.ubc.ca/tech-uses), provides guidance on using the supported educational tools (http://lthub.ubc.ca/guides) (including Canvas), explains how to contact support groups (http://lthub.ubc.ca/support), and shares project updates (http://lthub.ubc.ca/projects) and governing decisions (http://lthub.ubc.ca/governance) related to teaching with technology.

For more information about getting started with Canvas, please visit UBC's Canvas website for instructors (https://faculty.canvas.ubc.ca/).

UBC Studios Guides

These short videos provide excellent summaries for putting together a media setup and recording lectures at home.

In addition, UBC Studios together with UBC AV and UBC LT Hub put together An Introduction to the Do-it yourself Home Kit (http://mediamakers.sites.olt.ubc.ca/files/2020/08/Lightboard-Mobile-Intro_CR.pdf), which goes through the steps of setting up a home studio - from required equipment, recommended purchases, light board layout, cost break down, to software and distributed platforms. Additional resources on creating your own DIY media projects can be found on their UBC Media Makers (https://mediamakers.sites.olt.ubc.ca/) website.

Preparing to Teach in Fall 2020: Guiding Principles (https://keepteaching.ubc.ca/)

Provides guidance and suggestions for designing and teaching courses online. This includes six high-level guiding principles, accompanied by implications for instructors, for UBC, for faculty and for programs. This is supported by six summary reports, each on a specific area of focus.

CTLT Online Teaching Program (https://canvas.ubc.ca/courses/52088)

The modules in this course are designed to help you adapt your course for the online environment and prepare to teach online.
