Instructor: Moshe Rozali, e-mail: rozali@phas.ubc.ca (TA email: prat@phas.ubc.ca).

Lectures: Tuesdays and Thursday, 9:30-10:50 in Hebb 13.

Office hours: Hennings 412, Tuesdays 11-12.

Recommended Textbook: Griffiths Introduction to Quantum Mechanics (any edition).

Midterm: March 8th, 9:30, precise material covered will be announced closer to the date.

Course outline:

  • Review of the basic principles and formalism, simple bound state problems, scattering off simple potentials, QM in 3 dimensions: Hydrogen atom, angular momentum.
  • Time independent perturbation theory, degenerate perturbation theory, applications to the Hydrogen atom.
  • The Variational Method, the ground state of Helium.
  • The WKB approximation, applications to bound state and scattering, tunnelling.
  • Time Dependent Perturbation Theory and atomic transitions.
  • Scattering theory.
  • Bonus material, if there is time left.

    Marking:

    Grading scheme:

  • Problem sets 30%.
  • In-class mid-term 25%.
  • Final exam 45%.

Homework will be given on Thursdays, and will be due on the following Thursday in class or by 4:00pm (they can be left in my office, or under my door if I'm not there). Late homeworks are accepted up to one week late for half credit.

You are welcome to discuss the problems with the other students, but the submitted assignments must be your own work.

Please try to resolve grading issues for assignments with the grader first. Contact me if there are still unresolved issues.
