Suggestions for Electives

Physics Majors take at least 9 credits of Physics electives to be chosen from the courses tabulated below. The courses on the right side of the table can only be taken in the fourth year because of prerequisite requirements. PHYS 304 is not considered an elective unless you also take PHYS 412. In the case of PHYS 403, 400 you should seek approval from the instructor and the Departmental Advisor. PHYS 314,315,317,318,437 will not be given every year. If you take PHYS 319 you can use PHYS 309 towards the 9 credit. If you have more than 3 credits in 349/409 the excess credit can be used towards the 9 credits.

The program requires at least 18 credits in courses in the Faculty of Arts. Of these, 6 credits must be in first year English. It is possible to defer 3 credits of first year English to the second year, but it is a good idea to complete the English requirement as early as possible. You have a very wide range of choice for the rest of the arts credits. Many students choose one or more of the offerings in the Department of Philosophy, ECON 100 or 309, ENGL 301 or courses in French or a foreign language.

Of the remaining credits of electives at least 9 must be in courses other than ASTR, MATH or PHYS. A further 6 may be in any faculty, while the rest should be in Arts and Science and may be in the field of the Major.

You are strongly advised to take at least one course in Computer Science. Most students will prefer to take CPSC 122 to be followed by CPSC 128 if they wish to take more advanced courses, such as e.g. CPSC 216. An alternative route to upper level Computer Science courses is CPSC 124/126.
