Program Requirements

You should consult the University Calendar for the Faculty-wide requirements for graduation. The requirements include

• 18 credits in the Faculty of Arts of which 6 credits must be in first year English. The English requirement must be satisfied before promotion to year 3. Note that some (but not all) courses in Geography and in the School of Family and Nutritional Sciences can be used to satisfy the Arts requirement (see the Calendar for details).
• 72 credits in the Faculty of Science.
• 48 credits in courses numbered 300 and above. Of these 30 must be in Science and not more than 12 in a faculty other than Science and Arts.
• 9 credits outside the field of the Major. The excluded courses are all PHYS, ASTR and MATH courses.
• Students who do not have credit for Biology 11 or 12 take three credits of 100-level BIOL. Students with credit for Biology 11 or 12 complete three credits of an ASTR, BIOL, EOSC, or science-credit GEOG or PSYC lecture course. Students who entered the Faculty of Science prior to Sept. 2001 are exempt from this requirement.

Some other details:

• If you took a calculus course in secondary school, you are allowed to write a MATH 100 exam prior to entering UBC. If you pass, you get credit for MATH 100 without taking the course (see Calendar for further details). MATH 102/103 104/105 or 120/121 may replace MATH 100/101. MATH 180 or 184 may replace MATH 100.
• If you don't have credit for Chemistry 12 you must take CHEM 111 instead of CHEM 121.
• In order to enter the Physics Major program you must have 60% or better in your first-year physics courses. To be promoted to the third year in the program you must have better than the minimum passing grade in each of PHYS 209 and 216.

NOTE: MATH 200 and 221 are prerequisites for PHYS 216. They should therefore be taken in the first term of the second year. Similarly, MATH 317 is a prerequisite for PHYS 301 (354). It should therefore be taken in the first term of the third year. If you have the necessary prerequisites you may take MATH 317 in the second term of the second year. In general, it is important that you don't postpone required Mathematics courses. If you do, many physics courses become unnecessarily difficult.

PHYS 420 is no longer given as separate course, instead there is a section of PHYS 409 which is equivalent to the old PHYS 420. Permission from instructor is required. PHYS 349 directed studies requires permission from the course leader in addition to the professor supervising the project.
