ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver invites applications from outstanding candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor.  Applications in all relevant subfields are encouraged and the successful candidate will create an independent research program which complements the existing strengths of the department such as in Astronomy, Cosmology, Biophysics, AMO, Medical Physics, Gravity, String, and Quantum Information Theory, Particle Physics, and Nuclear Physics among others.  More details of our research program can be found on the Department’s website (phas.ubc.ca).  Please note that applicants in the field of Condensed Matter Physics and related subfields represented in the Stuart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute (see qmi.ubc.ca) should direct their applications to our parallel search in that area (see http://www.phas.ubc.ca/open-positions-physics-astronomy).  Candidates must have a Ph.D. Degree or equivalent, demonstrated potential for an outstanding research record, and are expected to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to supervise graduate students. The successful candidate will be appointed at the level of Assistant Professor.

The Physics and Astronomy Department (www.phas.ubc.ca) is one of the largest and most scientifically diverse in Canada. Our faculty and staff are committed to attracting and training outstanding students and conducting forefront research that spans the field.

Applicants are urged to submit online applications. A CV, publications list, a statement of research interests, and a summary of teaching interests and experience are required. Three letters of reference should be arranged to be directly submitted, preferably electronically, to jobs=At=phas.ubc.ca. UBC’s strategic plan identifies inclusion as one of our key priorities.  We welcome colleagues with the experiences and competencies that can contribute to our principles of inclusion, equity, and diversity throughout campus life.  In your application, please include 2-3 sentences describing your experience working with a diverse student body and your contributions to creating/advancing a culture of equity and inclusion on campus or within your discipline.

Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the BC Human Rights Code including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Metis, Inuit or Indigenous person. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

PLEASE NOTE: For reference letters, please ensure that competition # FAC-2018-04 is included in the email subject field.
